It consists of a remote on/off control you can put in your pocket. Like the remote used for car alarms. This controls a wall receiver that you plug in the TCT wire. I had it scaring kids today. I just hit the on, followed immediatly by the off. If anyone hasn't built Trash Can Trauma yet, do it. It's great. Larry _ ___c Lawrence H. I've been lurking for a bit, but wanted to contribute an idea I've not seen on this list yet. My girlfriend and I are setting up a fairly simple "haunted house" for trick-or-treaters this year--in fact, it's outdoors. Her house is a duplex, and a walkway runs from the side of the driveway at the front of the house back to the "front" door at the extreme back on either side. Her walkway is naturally enclosed by trees (don't remember the type offhand) and thus is very dark at night. Last year at Christmas, I bought a dimmer switch for miniature Christmas light strings...it has a touch-sensitive metal plate to pick one of four settings: off, exceedingly dim, medium, or regular brightness. Well, this year we bought 200 miniature, purple Hallowe'en lights to hook up to the switch, and at the dimmest setting, it looks eerily as if 200 little red eyes are peering at you from the eaves and trees above. If this strikes anyone's fancy, I bought the switch and lights at Target, and many of these stores are already beginning to stock their Christmas supplies now. Try a welding supply store, see if you can RENT a 20lb or 50lb bottle and tell them what you would like to do, they might even loan you the hose and a valve! ***NOTE*** REQUEST SIPHON BOTTLES! > We are scuba divers with some tanks we don't use anymore, > could we have them filled somewhere with CO2? It would be better to scope out the welding supply stores. As a safty note, those bottles have lotsa pressure,(in other words, if that hose gets loose while in operation it will give you a lashing you will not soon forget! If you decide on this type of rig,see if they will assemble it for you and inforom you on how to handel it. Take a truck, I don't think you can haul CO2 in a car in the US anymore. In a similar vein (sorry for the bad pun), each Halloween afternoon we have busses from the various area nursing homes that come and park out front for a bit to let the elderly men and women look at our "haunted yard." Seeing their smiling faces in the bus windows is a real treat. One of us usually puts on a mask and gets on each bus for a moment to say "boo!" The nursing home residents get a real thrill out of that, and so do we. Like Kathy, we didn't initiate the visits, but we certainly have encouraged them since. May I suggest some of you ghouls with decorated yards call up your area nursing homes and suggest an outing for their residents to let them view your decorations from the bus? Maybe you could suggest some more "haunted" spots in your vicinity and they could make an afternoon of it. As much as I like Edward Woodward, who plays a visiting police constable, I always cheer the pagans on at the bloodthirsty end. This film always puts me in the mood for the season. Especially recommended for Celts who get a little misty-eyed at the thought of the Feast of Samhain.) THE GREEN MAN (based on the genuinely spooky Kingsley Amis novel. With Albert Finney as an alcoholic innkeeper, this usually shows up on the A&E cable channel in October. Metaphysically scary.) THE HAUNTING (already mentioned by other posters. I have seen this many times and it always scares the bejeesus out of me.) HALLOWEEN (The original. Called the first "slasher" movie, it actually relies mostly on atmosphere and suggestion for its scares, unlike the hordes of predecessors it spawned. Essential viewing for the season.) FIVE MILLION MILES TO EARTH (The scariest blend of science fiction and horror until ALIEN. Classic British product from Hammer Films, with a cheerily bleak view of mankind's origins.) UNDER THE VOLCANO (Not a horror movie at all, but Albert Finney (again) as an alcoholic (again) British consul in Mexico during the Day of the Dead. I just like this movie a whole lot when I want to be depressed.) MACBETH (Ahhh, Bill Shakespeare really knew a thing or two about scaring people. I have the Roman Polanski version with Jon Finch, but usually watch Orson Welles grim, creepy, impressionistic black and white version at Hallowe'en). and lastly: The A&E BIOGRAPHY Houdini episode. Harry Houdini died on Hallowe'en, you know, and we always remember him this time of year. Pretty idiosyncratic choices, I know. Anyone else have any seasonal favorites? Who could ask for a better endorsement? :) Yes, the big stores - once they see a market - often drive the smaller guys out of the business. It's very sad. All I can say is, find someone you're comfortable working with and become a loyal customer. The big guys more often than not achieve lower pricing in several ways. One is volume purchasing, another is low overhead. Low overhead usually translates to lower paid, less knowledgeable, less exper- ienced personnel. So do you want to shop prices, or service? We each have to decide that for ourselves. It depends on what I'm shopping for. In the case of theatrical supplies/equip- ment, I've found a local outfit which suits my needs nicely (mostly because of great service). But I wouldn't go to a large chain for this stuff to save a few bucks. Oddly, I can see a time when the K-Marts, Wal-Marts, Tar- gets and similar chains might drive Halloween Adventure or Spencer's out of the business. Prices on the exact same product (i.e.: Trendmasters) can be found priced much lower at the chains. If Spencer's and Halloween Adventure get out of the biz, they have other markets to fall back on. Not so the smaller operations... Support Nathan, Denny, or anyone else on the list who are in the Halloween business. Their hearts are in it. I doubt that you could find anyone who would be willing to fill a SCUBA tank with CO2. If they did, they would have to make an adaptor because a SCUBA tank has a very unique "fitting". CO2 doesn't support combustion, but would definately suffocate someone trying to breathe it. You could possibly remove the entire fitting and put a standard high pressure valve on it, but it may not fit the threads either. Most bottled gases are rated for less than most SCUBA tanks(3000 psi), so it wouldn't explode from overpressure. All in all, I doubt that it is worth even trying. There have been a number of people on this list asking for sources for inexpensive props. And there have been many places mentioned as places to get these items. And no one said a word about the places suggested. My husband mentions that Spencers has a wild and crazy card, that you can use to get discounts on blacklights. And that he noticed inexpensive skulls at K-mart and Wal-mart. And seems to have incurred the rath of some list members. We AGREE that these places don't have the staff with the knowlege to be of any real help. In fact we ordered stuff from Denny because he is so wonderfully helpful and knowledgeable, we placed this order not knowing he was associated with this list, he got our order just on the strength of his personal service. (Thanks again Denny) In fact when we were at Lowes yesterday we thought we'd take a chance and see if they maybe had some blcklights. The girl we asked didn't even know what a blacklight was. Oh Puh-lease! We realize that for the best stuff, help and ideas the place to go are to the people that specialize in Halloween. But depending on the part of the country you live in the only way to get Halloween supplies is to do it through mail order and you don't think of every little thing at the time you place your order. So where does that leave you? Go to town and see what you can find at the best price at the local stores you have availible to you. And just for the record WE DID NOT buy our skulls at Wal-mart and K-mart, we just thought we were passing along a good deal to those with a limited budget and limited time. We do not, to our knowledge have a local small business that specializes in Halloween . If we did you can be sure we would be there with checkbook in hand. Stir in 3 cups of the whipped topping and 1/2 of the crushed cookies. Spoon into a 13" x 9" dish. Sprinkle with the remaining crushed cookies (looks like the earth). Refrigerate 1 hour. Decorated with spoonfuls of whipped topping (which whirl into little funny ghosts with a little chocolate icing for eyes and mouth), rectangular sandwhich cookies (tombstones) and candied pumpkins. Doesn't seem to take much time, but the result is pretty funny. I've made several web shooters myself, both from the designs in the halloween-l archives and from a amateur filmaker magazine article from the '70s and Denny's shooter blows them all away (so to speak). Denny's shooter is made out of metal with a rubber border on the blade edges to reduce the chance of injury. It has a 1/4 inch diameter shank, and attaches to my electric hand drill. The web fluid container, also made out of metal, holds a lot of fluid, which allows for some serious webbing before refilling. The whole unit is very solid and nicely machined. The shooter also comes with a pint of Denny's web fluid. In the shooters I built, I tried a variety of fluids. Rubber cement, cold vulcanizing fluid and even karo syrup. With the exception of the syrup(a real bad choice when you have to clean it up!), these webs are all extremely flammable. Denny's fluid makes webs that are nonflammible when dry, a real plus if you want to have webs around lit candles. The webs are white and are more visible than ones made with other fluids. The shooter puts out an awesome amount of webs. With my home-built shooters, it would take several minutes to web up my garage door(my web test area), Denny's shooter had it covered in less than a minute. My rubber cement webs stayed up for about an hour before collapsing, Denny's webs are still up. His machine works right out of the box with no tweaking. That alone was worth the $68.95. I spent a weekend trying to optimize my shooters. His shooter came with a list of helpful webbing tips and even a cleaning wire to clean out the little web holes. Denny is available by phone for tips not covered in his list. Geez, I sound like an Infomercial. ;-) Anyhow, I value my time, and I wish I had bought Denny's shooter before I spent all of the effort to build my own. My "rant" was not made to incite or even irritate people but I can see how it may have had that effect. We all have to shop "price" when necessary, let's face it, our families and mortgage payments come first. Heck, I even bought a couple of those goofy looking Wal-Mart skulls 'cause they were a bargain. I have no idea what I'm going to do with them! I have no trouble telling a customer to try Spencer's for black light bulbs, I hope they understand like you and Jim do that I'm trying to help and keep this hobby fun. My problem is the fact that the large companies offer us NOTHING other than cheap prices. I sometimes question if they can do anything without expecting a financial return of some sort. This is the only real Halloween mailing list on the Internet, and I ask rhetorically -where are they?- and are they going to be here with us on November 1st.? There have been many posts related to pricing, service, etc. I think the basic response in- tended to say that we often sacrifice knowledge and experience for low prices. That's hardly a new revelation as we all know. As a matter of fact, I work at a Spencer's and have had my eyes opened as to what the Big Guys can do pricewise. If they can beat Spencer's every which way from Sunday, I shudder to think what they can do to the < little, itty-bitty > guys out there. I happen to be relatively knowledgeable as to the products, but the kids working alongside me not only don't know the merchandise, in most cases they could hardly care less. They could get the same minimum wage job sell- ing doodads from the other stores in the mall. So that's where the trade-off comes in. For those that want personalized, knowledgeable service, you may want to try the small companies with years of experience under their belts. For lower prices, go to the chains. These are generalizations, but ones that generally hold up. There are 6 molds in the tray, a haunted house, a ghost, a witch and pumpkins of various sorts. If you purchased four jello mixes you got a free halloween mold. I read earlier today that you can "paint" ghosts on your walls with Woolite, and they will glow under a blacklight. Is this safe for interior, painted walls? I would love use this idea in my living room and dining room, but I am afraid to harm our walls. Is it safe? Also, I would love to make a giant spiderweb for my front porch...do you usually tie one together by hand? Does anyone have any tips on patterns, etc? Thanks in advance! Happy Happy Joy Joy :) Put away those white jackets and large nets. I am ok now, it seemed like everyone on the list was in the Bay area just a few weeks ago! Anyways, try the Spirit store on Sports Arena Blvd if your local Pic N Save is out. I think they are $% there also. They had plenty when I was there, but you might want to call if you decide you want one. Well let me just say it has not harmed my exterior walls which are painted with an exterior water-based latex. One note though... the woolite does dry kind of sticky and is collecting little bugs that are attracted to the glow - you won't have the bug problem indoors, but it will probably attract dust to it a little. Of course it will be harder for you to wash your walls when Halloween is over - I just have to hose down my house. If you really want to do it, I'd test it in a hidden corner first to see if the Woolite does harm interior paint. \\\|/// \\ - - // ( @ @ ) +---------oOOo-(_)-oOOo----------+ | Lisa Marie Peterson | | Administrative Assistant | | CellAccess Division | | FORE SYSTEMS WEST | | direct 408-467-4626 | | email peterson@fore.com | | internet http://www.fore.com | +------------------Oooo----------+ oooO ( ) ( ) ) / From owner-halloween-l@majordomo.netcom.com Thu Oct 10 13:44:57 1996 Date: Thu, 10 Oct 1996 13:41:53 -0700 From: Joyce Gair To: halloween-l@netcom.com Subject: Funny Witch Reply-To: halloween-l@netcom.com Hi friends, Andy has posted the "funny witch" picture at http://cascade.mit.edu/halloween for your veiwing convience She looks absolutely "smashing" Andy .... thanks, Joyce -- igabalot@worldnet.att.net Joyce Gair in Spokane, WA From owner-halloween-l@majordomo.netcom.com Thu Oct 10 13:49:19 1996 Date: Thu, 10 Oct 1996 14:26:36 -0600 From: Lauren Jones To: halloween-l@netcom.com Subject: House of Terror -Reply Reply-To: halloween-l@netcom.com Could someone provide more info on the following for the haunts web page?
