For over a decade I've plotted and planned, and this book is a very worth addition to the collection. It's not aimed at the front yard haunt, but rather thej full walkthrough type haunted houses which me and my best friend will be doing in the future, So this is one mighty important addition to our pool of knowledge. Thanks Denny for telling me about this important tome. I am neither dead nor sleeping, and have been watching happily as new members have joined the list over the past couple of weeks. Your enthusiasm is great, and the flow of ideas has been most rewarding. It seems to me that the breadth of subject matter bing discussed has increased, as well. I hope everyone is having as rewarding a season as your list contributions suggest! I would like to encourage all of you, once again, to stay around after Halloween, and share in the long-range preparations for next year. Notes From 'The Old Crank' I've lost count of the number of Flying Crank Ghost builders out there, many of whom I have heard from personally. I am very glad to see that so many have enjoyed building this item, and I can't wait to hear the reactions from the haunters' guests. Remember, if you'd like to have your incarnation of this effect appear in 'the infamous book' ("Phantasmechanics",) snap a photo of it, preferably a time exposure under your actual lighting. That offer also applies to builders of the 'Grave Jumper,' and the 'Grim Organist.' I should explain this project to newcomers. If all goes well, the book will be out by July of 1997, in a self-published form. It will contain a good number of build-it-yourself Halloween effects projects, including variations on the FCG, and refined versions of the Organist. Most importantly, the tome will be reasonably priced, and available through vendors who are members of this list. List members have expressed interest in contributing projects and ideas to the book, and they will be represented by name in the text. If you'd like to be involved in this project, drop me a line. Building a Miniature FCG This past week, I got a couple of experts over to my apartment to view my mini-Pepper illusion. These friends, who are experienced professional magicians, and are very familiar with Pepper's Ghost (lurking magi may recognize Joe Harrison and Jon Racherbaumer,) were quite enthusiastic, and Jon insisted that the miniature FCG used in the illusion moved so naturally he thought he was watching a video effect of a human figure in a flying rig. _That_ made my day. :-) You can build this mini-FCG easily. Simply substitute a small styrofoam egg for the wig stand. Use paper-clip wire for the arms, shoulder assembly, and attachment point on the head. The loops that join the arm segments and shoulders should be bent with a small needle-nose plier, and be as snag-free as possible. Use card-stock paper hands cut with tiny scissors, just as in the full size version, but covering the hands with cloth will be unnecessary. Just make little hooks at the ends of the arm members, hook the paper hands onto them, and secure with Tacky glue or epoxy. You will find that the hands can be easily fixed into gestures by careful use of the needle-pliers and bending of the fingers. You will need a very thin cloth, but don't use netting. The cloth should be only translucent, not transparent like veil net. It should drape freely, like silk. The pattern I used approximates the shape of a 'rain-poncho' like the ones sold at amusement parks. For this ghost, I shredded the bottom of the cloak to very good effect. Attach the cloak over the arms of the figure with tiny sewn attachment points at the elbows and wrists. Do not sew through the metal loops, but around them, so as not to prohibit movement, having the effect of sleeves. Remember, you want this marionette to be able to move naturally, so experiment as you go. I formed the hood separately, and covered the head with cloth as suggested for the full-sized original FCG. I recommend you not add a mouth to this small version. See if you agree - you can add a painted one later, if not. Yes, this miniature does use LED eyes. Since it is so small, the lead-in wires are made from transformer-wrapping wire, which is insulated only with lacquer. This thin wire (available at an electronics parts store) does not hamper the movement of the figure when flying, yet if carefully handled, it will not short out when two strands are touched together. Before soldering it to the LED's (see the original .jpg FCG plans at Don's web site for the circuit,) you may need to carefully strip the laquer off the transformer wire ends to assure a clean weld. The motor I used is the same Dayton number I use in the full size version, but any slow 6-RPM-vicinity gearmotor will do. What's funny in my arrangement is that the mechanism is actually larger than the ghost it is meant to fly. :-) Also, the crank is simply a short stub of aluminum stock about 3 1/2 inches long. You can simply epoxy a bolt parallel to the flat surface of the aluminum bar, allowing it to extend down far enough to attach the pivot assembly, a miniature of the full-size one shown in the plans. If you epoxy the pivot bolt to the side that does the pushing, there will be little stress on the part. Real mechanics (and goofballs like myself) will prefer to use hardware to attach the pivot bolt to the arm, but I don't think it's critical. ;-) Just make sure your surfaces are clean before using the epoxy. Also, as this ghost is very light, you won't need the annoying counterweight. To illustrate: ________| |_________________________________ | | | | | | | | |_______| | ARM | | | | | | | | | |________| |_____________________________| |_| |___| | | ^ Motor Shaft & U-bolt | | ------- <--- Pivot | | --- I used screw-in cup-hooks instead of pulleys, and black sewing thread for the lines. The paint scheme I invented for this ghost really worked well. I used acrylic fluorescent blue and yellow. First, with an airbrush, I bathed the entire figure (minus eye-holes) in the blue. Then, using a small bristle-brush, I painted radiating yellow lines that started at the neck, and spread downward in a 'flame' pattern to the ragged ends of the shroud. The hands I painted solid blue. I did this painting under blacklight, as suggested in the original instructions. Finally, I recommend you actually use a Pepper's Ghost arrangement to display this ghost. I can't tell you how effective is is to be able to see a background setting through a transparent FCG in motion, but when you try it, you'll find out! You will need to play with lighting, but the work will be worth it. Need a glass for the effect? Try a framing shop. One shop near me cut a glass (for an even smaller Pepper setup) from scrap glass she had lying around, and didn't even charge me! If you are new to Pepper's Ghost, and FCG's, go to Don Bertino's website and browse the archives and download the FCG plans from the images page: http://www.calweb.com/~bertino/ Questions? Comments? I have never had an unsatisfied or return customer. They are cheap ($30.00), last forever and look great. Once I had one customer that I had made teeth for (he was short of money) so I told him to come three nights during the halloween season and had him open aluminum cans wearing the teeth I made him. Reply-To: halloween-l@netcom.com Jacqui, Umm, I saw Lord of Illusions and I thought it was silly. (Sorry to anyone who liked it; just my .02 cents). Another movie I forgot to mention which scared the @%#$@ out of me - which, ironically also stars George C. Scott (I had mentioned the Changeling earlier). It was one of the movies in the Exorcist series (IV?), and George C. Scott plays a homicide detective investigating several devil-worship-type murders in Georgetown, MA. The creepy part about this movie is that you don't ever see any of the actual violence...only the horrible aftermath. But there is one part where the demon has drained all the blood out of a man while he is laying in a hospital room. Not one drop of blood is spilled anywhere in the room - the demon collected all the blood into a tray full of plastic cups, which were all lined up very neatly next to the man's bed. Good golly, I had nightmares for a week. And what about the old woman in the nursing home, who you can see crawling around on the ceiling as George C. Scott is leaving the room? YOWEEEEEEE. Someone followed that up, asking if he/she could have meant Wimshurst generator. There is a book available on such things and I have a copy of it. Ford, R.A. Homemade Lightning: Creative Experiments in Electricity, Blue Ridge Summit, PA : Tab Books, 1991. The cover price is $14.95. I had forgotten all about it, but the above comments made me realize that here was an untapped source for Halloween effects. This is definitely not low tech. The book gives a brief history of electricity and electrostatic energy, provides plans for building a modified Wimshurst generator and further suggestions for experimentation. I haven't yet had nor made the time to delve into this subject (the book caught my eye and I picked it up for the future), but the possibilities for Halloween in this area seem very promising. I seem to recall seeing some kind of electrostatic generator in an Edmund Scientific or Carolina Biologic Supply catalog. The projects in the book I have would demand the skills of a serious home hobbiest with time on his/her hands. The only advantage I can see in these plans is the potential for scaling them up to a pretty big generator. The one described in the book creates sufficient charge to cause a model's hair to stand completely on end (there's a picture in the book). Is the spark effect produced by this thing more spectacular than a Jacob's Ladder? Probably not, but someone willing to build and experiment with one of these would likely discover some unimagined uses. I would be happy to lend this book by mail to anyone who is seriously interested in following up on this, as long as he/she would commit to returning the book when finished with it. I'm finally caught up! Yeah!! Keep 'em coming! I have always been a big Halloween fan (also a big x-mas nut...dad and I made five x-mas trees for the yard and used 10,000 lights on the house!) since I was a kid. I started decorating my parents yard a few years ago because every year they get about 200-300 people trick-or-treating at their house. There are two elementry schools within a couple of miles and they live 5 houses away from a park so we always had tons of families living in the area. :) It's also not a huge city...about 40,000 people in Woodland (aka woodpile) CA and I guess word gets around because people would stop by and take pictures of our house on Halloween. Always had a blast! I moved to San Diego (love it!) from Sacramento about 6 months ago and I can't make it home this year for Halloween. :( Big Bummer! My roomie told me that there was only 1 kid that came to the door last year (I live in an apartment). What?! So it looks like I will instead go to other "haunts" this year and try to get some new ideas. Hello everyone, I've been subscribed for a couple of weeks and have posted a couple of times, but hadn't introduced myself...until now that is. :) I've been trying to keep up on reading all the great messages that you're all sending! I'm so glad I found this list because I thought that I was kind of "strange" to love doing the Halloween thing so much...now I know! :D Brenda From owner-halloween-l@majordomo.netcom.com Fri Oct 11 11:17:52 1996 Date: Fri, 11 Oct 1996 18:07:07 GMT From: "SHUNT.EMAIL.VILL.EDU" To: halloween-l@netcom.com Subject: For Sheri, aka PoisnIvy Reply-To: halloween-l@netcom.com I don't know about Tad, but I am from the Philly area. Let's see, Nessie, the Flying Dutchman's ship, dry ice in the pool... It boggles the mind! Perfect for the party night, since, weather permitting, we always expand out there, anyway! How about this for a thought: We need to attract the guests' attention to the effect, then have the wreck of monster float up into view. How about running an air line (with one of the now-ubiquitous washing machine valves) down into a floatation chamber. The chamber will fill, forcing out the water, and continue to vent bubbles into the pool, from under the "beastie". The larger mass of the creature will take longer to float up, so the massive bubbling action will come first, then the slower rising display. Allow a small air vent in the top of the float chamber, so once the air is turned off, it slowly refills with water and sinks again, to await the next cycle... But I think it would be fine for a twelve year old. There is no blood, guts and gore. One of the scariest scenes, I thought was when George C. Scott took the red rubber ball miles away and threw it in a river. When he returned home and opened the door the ball came bouncing down the stairs. It's the movies that leave something to the imagination that I think are the scariest. I like the rest of you I'm sure can imagine a lot worse than they can show in a movie. Is the spark effect produced by this thing *> more spectacular than a Jacob's Ladder? But as you say, something that plugs into the wall and gives a continuous display of emissions is pretty spectacular. If lightning generation is your thing, go for a Tesla coil. Depending how much time, money, effort and experimentation you want to put into this you can generate some pretty nice lightning bolt discharges a few feet long. As for the "clock thing", I think what the person was trying to describe was two half spheres, one smaller then the other, stacked together but not touching. If the spheres are made of a conducting material, you should thoretically be able to drive these with a High Voltage transformer and establish an arc between the plates. I have seen these things in older movies with science labs. They look like a big circular dish that has a lightnig arc randomly dancing around it. When I was at Spencers the other day, I saw a lightning machine that produces a similar effect. It was by the plasma balls and sold for around $100.00. Pretty much all of these devices work on the principle of generating a very high electric potential between two conductors, ~10,000 Volts or higher. If the conductors are close enough in proximity, the air between them will be ionized at this voltage and produce the lighning effect. Be CAREFUL playing with this and KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING. Jaccobs ladders, etc. produce leathal voltage levels at dangerous frequencies to the human body. dmz From owner-halloween-l@majordomo.netcom.com Fri Oct 11 12:19:44 1996 From: "Chris Howard " To: halloween-l@netcom.com Date: Fri, 11 Oct 1996 12:30:33 +0000 Subject: Re: More Movies... If you've used the flock lines gloves (like for dishwashing), you may have a problem. You could immerse the glove + ice in warm water, then turn the glove inside out to remove. I hope you cleaned the glove before using it as a mold, since it probably has some talcum powder or perhaps some kind of residual release agent on it. Good luck. My question to all is, is there a better way to make a good quality dummy that won't sag and droop all over the place. There has to be a better way. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Although I don't read the genre anymore, one book I recall that really spooked the heck out of me was, "The Keep" (the author's name escapes me at the moment). However, I *strongly* recommend you avoid the feature film with the same name. Feh. - Joe -- "Life is spent between episodes of women being mad at you." -- Anon. http://www.ee.umanitoba.ca/~djc/ D. I always try to "plug" this event, because it is such an interesting, creepy tour. I'll post the dates for the tour when I get them. Happy Haunting! Hope to hear from you, Sheri! If your library has a video section, you might try looking there. IF you end up wanting to buy a copy, I'd HIGHLY recommend "Time Warner Viewer's Edge". (Disclaimer: no association with them ... blah, blah, blah) For a free catalog and/or to discover whether or not they carry the video for which you're looking, phone 1-800-262-6868 Most of their videos are $9.95. If they don't carry the video for which you're looking, they also have a special order department (different phone number - you can ask). There's never been any video for which I've looked that they've not been able to obtain for me - even when the big video stores (Blockbuster, Hollywood Videos etc.) couldn't order it.
