I just finished my first Flying Crank Ghost, and I am so glad I decided to do it! It came out great, even though I know of several improvements I can make on my second one. I was a little leary of putting holes in my bedroom ceiling, but even my wife is glad I did. It is already the single best halloween prop I've ever put together. Much thanks to Doug Ferguson, who not only supplied excellent instructions and pictures, but also was very helpful answering my questions as I went along. I recommend this project to anyone who hasn't tried it. I am definitely making at least one more. My next step is to get up the nerve to try one of the compressed-air projects like Trash Can Trauma or Grave Jumper. I'm still a little apprehensive about trying one of these. I hope someone will talk me into it... To clarify, the 'one coming out the side' is the 'mix outlet' which should be conmnected to the actuators (pneumatic cylenders.) As Carl mentioned, simply cap the unused inlet, and you will then need to discover by experimentation which pair of contacts fire the inlet valve you wish to use. Usually, a visual trace of the wires will tell you immediately which circuit to connect. I'm still a little apprehensive > about trying one of these. I hope someone will talk me into it... I don't think that you will need too much convincing. Making compressed air effects was the most exciting thing that I ever did in my haunt. Several years ago, I found a garage sale that had some industrial strength air solenoid valves and actuators. (This was before I found Halloween-l and learned about washing machine valves.) I was ready to give the guy $200 for his collection (which, as it turned out, he salvaged from a demolished building). You can imagine my surprise when he said he'd give it all to me for $20! It didn't take long for me to make 6 different effects and realize that bicycle pumps made great pistons. Now that I've collected a few washing machine solenoids and more pumps, I'll be adding to my collection. If you don't want to get as adventurous as Trash Can Trauma of Grave Jumper this year (time is starting to run short), you can keep it simple simply attaching a dummy (I use my chicken wire dummies) to the handle of a bike pump. This will simply give vertical motion like the ghosts that jump out from behind gravestones at Disney. Alternatively, you could use one of the foot pedal style pumps to give you angular motion. I use one of these to make a Dracula dummy sit up in his coffin. With a couple of other modifications, I make his head turn to look at you. I'm hoping this year to make his arms raise up, like some of my other pnuematic effects. Go for it Jules. You'll find out that the effort will be well worth it. -- Happy Haunting Rob Freeman freemanr@oeonline.com From owner-halloween-l@majordomo.netcom.com Sun Oct 13 08:02:50 1996 Date: Sun, 13 Oct 1996 10:50:04 -0400 From: Craig Lewis To: halloween-l@netcom.com Subject: Re: Great Music... I paid about $15. for the 3/4" size at a local home improvement store. -Greywolf I've got to stop reading this newsgroup and get to building!!!!! And to top it off, he only has four patterns shown there; however, he also has some neat watermelon-carving patterns if you happen to be planning a June wedding. Anyway, the URL is: http://www.ili.net/~frey/carving/ I hope that this was some use to you. BTW, the designs themselves are very big on your screen, are in gif format, and for your sake I hope you have more than my meager 14.4 and 8 MB. Also, when trying to print the patterns via Netscape, they started coming out on two sheets each, so I cheated: I used a different program to print them. If you have some nasty 'ol AOL software on your computer, or maybe CompuPic, these should print the patterns out nicely on one sheet of paper. WAS going to head to Knotts for e usual update, but it's already begun., and I left my wallet at a friend's house the night before, so knotts is out. Doing the Knotts haunt next week though.... The Queen Mary this year features two mazes for $10, 2 bucks off coupon at Target. You start with the outside maze, which consumes most of the shopping bvillage. Basically, they emptied out all the shops and ran the mazes in and out of each one. It took around 20 minutes to go through the outside maze. The outside maze was ok. Music was loud, lots of fog machines, black lites, but each room was on it's own context. mostly empty corridors. Some rooms HAD the potential to be killer scare rooms were merely ok, wasting what could have been a good scare possibility. The main thing seemed to be endless corridors with occasional scares thrown in and some rooms which had little to no action, and some static scenes that could have been populated. The music was quite loud and overbearing, some killer death metal, tons of fog machines and lights around. prolly took about 15-20 minutes to go through it. Our rating was a 7. The inside maze was identical to last years, with the new addition being an electric chair which is found in the early pages in the Halloween Outlet catalog, some 8 grand of special effect. Similar scenario for the entire maze as well, also rating a 7. We feel the real shame was the waste of potential, given Basically, it's random ghouls scaring you from dark corners and inside rooms. Once again, boredom factor can set in. On the inside maze, for little to no extra budget, they could have tapped the scare potential of the ship itself to create a truly outstanding maze. Most of the inside maze was in the engine room. One deep seated fear we all have is heavy and hostile machinery. Throughout the maze, you are surrounded by such machinery, the catwalks weaving in and out of it. If the scare factor of the machinery was established, it would have created a steadily rising panic which grew as you walked deeper into the depths of the engine room. Another wasted potential was the propeller room. This room always scared the living crap out of me when I was younger. It still makes me uneasy now. The room is stuck to the side of the ship and has about 50 feet of water deep, showing the propellor. For the haunted house, they put camouflage netting over the railing and a strobe light in the corner, otherwise complete darkness. If you did not know it was there, you would have never known the pool was there. If they had things in the pool or called attention to it with something inside or the thought of something inside it, it would have made that much more fear. Basically, a 7 for both together and a shame for not using the full potential. The true ghosts, the many stories, those could have come into play. As is, it resembles a teenage heavy death metal type of haunted house. Me and my best friend got into a deep discussion and came up with 3 types of scare factors to be exploited in the haunted house situation. 1. The gore scare. This refers to gross things, maimed body parts, unidentifiable yuk, etc. Lots of monster movies pride themselves on reaching new lows in the gore factor. 2. The reflex scare. This refers to the BOO factor, the sudden jumping out or something suddenly acting unexpectedly, such as a painting coming to life suddenly. This triggers a massive surge of adrenaline, causing a sudden fright. A loud noise or a bright flash unexpectedly would fall into this category. 3. The psychological scare. This scare takes care and planning, but the results can be truly spectacular, causing more of a fright than the above factors. The idea is to toy with the emotions or to trigger certain emotions. For example, suspense would be psychological, creating a fear response without actually performing any of the above scares. This is in terms of setting a mood. A good example of the suspense would be in Nightmare on Elm St. 1, in which the boiler rooms are projected as sinister, creating a scary mood setting. Large machinery protrayed as malevolent would perform the similar function. Despair would fall under this category. The movie Misery performs this subtle horror, which plays on the fear of imprisonment. Skeletons in dungeons can create this mood, unless you break the mood with scare types 1 or 2. Fear of invasion is also a good step here, whether it's of one's physical environment (aliens landing) to bodily invasion, whether flesh or spirit (possesion, alien body takeover, etc..). H.R. Giger's artwork relies on this fear, the melding of formerly human beings with machinery creating a biomechanical being. Some haunted houses take advantage of this, with rooms that have humans strapped down, lots of tubes and machinery attached to them. Hellraiser 2 also took advantage Vicumization, fear of the dark all plays into this one. The usage o alone in pitcpitch black dark ride for the last 2 years, Slasher In The Dark. They used the Kingdom of the Dinosaurs ride, which helped as the cars moved inexorably deeper into the darkness, the voice of the slasher taunting as you go farther in. This never will work on those who are in the haunted house biz though, because we KNOW it's safe. If you are scared of what may happenb, it is a heightening in terror. One idea is my favorite, coming from a dream. It can be modified at will, but you will see how it plays on several of these psychological fears at once. I know, getting personal here, but I think it relates to thise whole essay. The dream is about a ride. A large brushed aluminum or stainless steel pyramid, about a hundred feet tall. (got this dream a decade before Luxor, gang). A path winds up sloping to the top, winding about 4 times. At the top is a small slide under the top tip where people slide into it. There is no exit. It's called the Pyramid of No Return. I was hanging round the stone courtyard at the base. Large rusty iron plate on the ground. A worker came over and dissembled it, revealing the contents underneath. Inside was a bunch of machinery and a glass jar with a cat's brain hooked up to wires and electrodes. (I know, it's a clique, but I don't lucid dream, ok?) Being psychic, I could read the cat's brain. It was mad. Quite angry. It knew exactly what was done to it, and that it was controlling the pyramid. And it hated us. Originally, the pyramid was a ride inside. The cat controlled it into something else. And it was extracting revenge. People were undergoing indescribable whatevers. They never returned from the pyramid. The park hno control, since if they ever tried to take over the control from the c to go into suicide. So literally they were stuck with a ride with a serious chip on it's shoulder. How many of the above horror types and subtypes did you see in there? Can you use any ideas from that particularly wierd dream? Be my guest. Also, one finaly horror is the lemmings type of horror. It ties into the imprisonment of circumstance, the mechanical horror. It's the one scene from the movie THE WALL, the one with the office workers marching along the conveyor belt in the factory. At the end of the belt, they throw themselves into a hopper. Down at the bottom of the hopper is a meat grinder endlessly churning out meat. Reply-To: halloween-l@netcom.com Hello All: A couple kind of hard to find scary CD's, but worth it once you do: COIL: "The Unreleased Hellraiser Themes" -- apparently COIL was supposed to do the soundtrack to the original Hellraiser, but Clive Barker felt it was just a little too spooky for the film (!?!?) -- anyhow, that's what it says on the inside cover! It's a neat little EP. Leaether Strip: "Serenade for the Dead" -- Instrumentals with titles such as "Stillborn", "Black Death", and "Blood Lust", you really can't go wrong! Has kind of a Euro-industrial synth sound to it, but it is dark, dark, dark... You would find either of these (at least here is San Diego) at your local Blockbuster Music or Tower Records under the IMPORT Section. ---Dana From owner-halloween-l@majordomo.netcom.com Sun Oct 13 23:35:50 1996 Date: Mon, 14 Oct 1996 02:19:19 -0400 From: Craig Lewis To: halloween-l@netcom.com Subject: Re: Great Music... Being around such creative people has been wonderful. Not only did I soak up all your energy and ideas, but I decided to host my own Halloween party this year. I am making a crank ghost, and lots of other things. Like many of you, I have more ideas than time, but I want to thank all of you who are so generous with your expertise. I'll stay subscribed to this list long after Halloween. If you've can stand to check out one more Web site, you can see the area I developed. It's called Hell's Half Acre. It's not quite done, as there is a tombstone matching game (which some of you helped with) to be added this week. If you do check it out, I'd love to know what you think, what you'd add or change, etc. http://www.startribune.com/stonline/html/fungames/boo/ Thanks--and happy howling, haunting and Halloweening. I'm a newbie online and loving all 250 messages that blinked in my box this a.m. I love the idea of writing something invisible that you can only see under blacklight! Here's another idea that I have kept on my back burner for years. Early Depression glass has a high lead content in it. A table setting of depression glass when viewed under blacklight will glow the color the glass was tempered in. Very eerie and very wild. The photo I saw of an entire dinner party done up in depression glass and under blacklight has stuck in my head ever since. Depression glass can be bought at antique places, resell shops and sometimes even found in Grandma's attic. Just take a small desk lamp with you with a blacklight bulb in it to check if it is the early stuff. Oh, and you can eat off the glass - the lead content is minimal regarding health concerns. They just shouldn't be dishwashed by a machine. ****************************************** namiller@umich.edu/NPPC/Phoenix Rising, Inc. ************************************************************************** From owner-halloween-l@majordomo.netcom.com Mon Oct 14 12:22:34 1996 Date: Mon, 14 Oct 1996 13:12:01 -0600 From: jett To: halloween-l@netcom.com Subject: Re: Creepy ScreenSavers? We were cleaning up the yard and emptying flower pots and my wife and I got the idea to jazz up the tomb stones with the dead flowers rather than tossing them. As far as that goes. During the year I get my wife roses. We save them after they wilt and die out. They make very nice decorations to put out in a vase at a halloween party. my too scents, dmz From owner-halloween-l@majordomo.netcom.com Mon Oct 14 13:18:41 1996 Date: Mon, 14 Oct 1996 15:00:47 -0500 (CDT) To: halloween-l@netcom.com From: DJ Subject: Re: Creepy ScreenSavers? Hi, Jett! I would love to have the Dripping Blood and ghost screensavers if it's not too much trouble. Thanks for posting! Hope your halloween is the scariest ever. :) DJ From owner-halloween-l@majordomo.netcom.com Mon Oct 14 13:22:08 1996 Date: Mon, 14 Oct 1996 13:03:40 -0700 (PDT) From: Dave Bell To: halloween-l@netcom.com Subject: Re: Rosco Paints!! To: halloween-l@netcom.com Date: Mon, 14 Oct 1996 16:34:46 -0400 (EDT) Reply-To: halloween-l@netcom.com Brenda, We went up to Salem (from PA) for 6 days. Stayed about 10 minutes outside Salem, made reservations in March. Couldn't get any closer, unless you wanted to spend lots of $$$. There is a great place called The Hawthorne Hotel. That's where the "Witches Ball" is every year. We were told that the same people book the same rooms year after year. Anyway, yeah everyone really gets into it. Halloween lasts for 2 weeks straight. We met a couple from Texas that flew up halloween nite just for this witches ball, stayed over & left the next day. They have been doing this for years. You could call Salem's Dept. of Commerce for a Halloween brochure, called Halloweens Haunted Happenings, its a schedule of all the events. Everyone should spend at least one halloween in Salem, its great! If you decide to go, Have a Great Time (you'll have no other choice) :-) Rudi From owner-halloween-l@majordomo.netcom.com Mon Oct 14 13:55:51 1996 Date: Mon, 14 Oct 1996 16:45:49 -0700 To: halloween-l@netcom.com From: Moon Subject: Re: Creepy ScreenSavers?
