Reply-To: halloween-l@netcom.com Someone asked about the background of a few of us "regulars," but I've waded through so many posts today, I forget who it was... Over the years, I have: Run a lemonade stand Delivered newspapers Been a busboy Flipped burgers Been a cashier Flipped burgers again Been an animal caretaker Worked in an art supply warehouse Sold furniture Operated a process camera for a graphic arts shop Been a mail clerk Been a kitchen equipment buyer Manned telephones for a Help Desk in an accounting dept. Been a data entry clerk Been a computer and peripherals buyer My formal education beyond high school has included: Graphic arts major dropped that for a "general studies" major dropped that for a Business Administration major I can (usually): Use a hammer and nails tell the difference between a drywall and sheet metal screw Be able to identify a 2X4 from 20 feet use a shovel change the oil in my car (oh...spark plugs, too) So how do I achieve my so-called "Techno Haunted Houses?" Well, they truly are not anything so technically designed as they are creatively designed. I read a lot (a LOT - just ask my wife and kids). I'm about a 6 or 7 on the 1 to 10 scale of creativity. I have a burning desire to see my ideas come to fruition. I leave the things I can not do (read: haven't learned how to do) well to others who can. I delegate. I can organize. I can convey my ideas fairly lucidly. I can (usually) generate enthusiasm in my assistants. I love Halloween. I love to do this for myself as much as for the kids. I'm no techno-wizard. I don't know the difference between amps, volts, and watts. I can't disassemble an item and still be able to figure out why it works (or why it doesn't). I made up my mind to contribute what little I can to make this a better list for everyone. Somehow, I've given others the idea that I'm in the same league as Denny, Carl, Doug, or any of the others who *really* know how to get more bang for your buck. Isn't true. I lean heavily on these guys - and others - to make up for my "shortcomings." Oh...and my haunts have an average budget of three to four hundred dollars each year. Hate to waste those precious PTA funds. I try not to exhibit an elitist tone since I don't consider myself among the "elite," whatever that means in regards to this list. But like Denny, I tend to ignore posts where someone wants the answers handed to them on a silver platter without exerting a modicum of effort - or at least going through the archives (as massive as they are) when told the answers lie there. Both Denny and I have recommended searching the archives to avoid re-posting of information which has been covered ad infinitum throughout the year. Other posts have gone unanswered (by me, at least) if they are meant to be personal exchanges which somehow have made it to the list instead of each other's mail boxes; if they ask for or give info on a subject I am absolutely clueless about (i.e.: cross-stitching, preserving pumpkins, electro-bio-mechanical spontaneous life generation ;); if the info holds no interest for me; or (as is often the case), I save the message intending to respond and have no time to do so. I've always assumed I've been accepted by others on the list and I always welcome new members. We had a very pretty female store mannequin who for once wasn't dressed as a monster in some other scene. Her hand was extended as if she were holding out something. I dressed her in normal clothes and then dressed a couple of kid sized dolls in trick-or-treat outfits and positioned them so that they were holding their candy bags out to the nice "lady". In her outstretched hand poised delicately over the candy bags was a cheap-o mechanical beating heart. Let me tell you, this *really* got to some of the little ones that night! It's funny. It was to have the archives manually be "condensed" around single topics. This work to be done by volunteers from the List, not one or two, more like ten or twelve. Ideally each person would then only have a single topic to condense. Last week, quite a few List members volunteered on the spot.. so I believe the work force is ready, willing and able. By "condense" I mean remove all prior references (quotes) so that no text is repeated. Also remove any extraneous Internet trailers, etc. Naturally, keeping all original text, author's names, Internet address, and original msg dates. *** I'd be willing to "condense an existing topic" to demonstrate (just say the word) *** This project would only have to managed by you, mainly to distribute topics to volunteers, collect and post. Oh, yes, and answer the emailed questions (probably the most work) of volunteers. Someone suggested doing this work, automatically by use of software, but their program wouldn't remove redundant text. Another suggested an FAQ file be formed. This would be a nice addition to the archives but wouldn't replace the condensed topic work (above). Aren't you supposed to use hot glue to attach things together (also to seal things and if you're really good, use it as artists putty). Of course you have to have a hammer (I like a 5 lb sledge) to slam the things you've glued together back apart again so you can reglue them in a different position. For cutting, I use a Dremmal. It cuts everything: nails, sheet metal, the workbench if you forget to turn it off when you put it down. I have yet to cut a 2x4 with it, but there's always next year. SO, to change oil in the car, First Dremmal off the oil plug. When the oil is out, hot glue the pan shut. Wait for the glue to cool and refill. The spark plugs are a little more tricky: you wack off the old plugs with the hammer, Dremmal out the hole, then glue in the new plugs. And they say programmers shouldn't work with tools... roy. My husband took a regulare ice chest and cut a hole in one end that fit a piece of plastic tubing from the smoke machine. Then he cut a hole in the other end and fitted it with a small muffin fan that we found in a junk yard. He then cut a piece of cardboard so that it fit into the ice chest but was about two inches or so shorter than the sides. She put it in the ice chest at a slat " / " with the dry ice on the side where the smoke came in and the dry area on the side of the fan. The smoke came in, ran through the dry ice, over the top of the cardboard and out the fan. He had a tube attached to the fan outflow so it shot the cold smoke down the hallway. It worked great, best smoke on the floor effect we have evey had. And to put it away you open the ice chest and put all the parts inside!! He put the whole thing together in about 1/2 hour!! Try it!! Using the excellent advice fellow ghouls from the list gave me, I used a short piece of PVC to run fog from the machine into a styrofoam ice chest which was 3/4 filled with ice. (I just used regular ice and didn't bother with the "dry" kind.) I cut a hole in the opposite wall of the ice chest and inserted some 4" dryer venting hose. (My hose was about 30' long.) Holes were slit in the venting at intervals of a foot or so to allow fog to escape. This very simple setup (which only took a few minutes to put together) produced *perfect* ground hugging fog which was routed through our cemetary. My setup was simple enough that I didn't need to install a fan in the ice chest to help move things along. I did need to use duct tape to keep fog from escaping around the lid of the ice chest, though. (Of course, I have been genetically programed to use duct tape on *everything* I make. ) One word of caution: make sure the PVC which connects the fog machine to the ice chest is located high enough that water from melting ice won't flow backwards into the machine. There you have it, a simple, cheap method that really works! Remember it wasn't *my* idea, though. It's the advice of the evil geniuses that make this list so great. Hope this helps. We liked the ones with the controls to change speed and things. We are going to make a lab next year and it would be neat to have the moving red lights. Since we are doing a tribute to the classic horror movies we are thinking of making the front facade a old fashion Movie Marquee, and the red lights running around the edge would be great!! When you go and pick up your dry ice make sure that you close the lid really tight on your ice chest...Or when you stop at the store the slight wisps of dry ice smoke coming from the ice chest will make some people very nervous...!! On a dry ice thought, we used the block ice last year and just broke it into pieces. This year we found a closer supplier and it came in small cubes. Worked much better!!
